Formula One star has thumbs insured for £9 million
Ferrari Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has reportedly had his thumbs insured for a sum close to £9 million.
It is part of a comprehensive life and accident package from Ferrari sponsors Santander.
It comes as the Spanish driver signed a new deal with the firm that now sees him sponsored by both the insurance and banking divisions of the company.
"Alonso's thumbs are a big symbol as, apart from being essential when driving a Formula One car, they represent a sign of victory and that everything is under control and well protected," a spokesperson said.
Alonso will be hoping his thumbs serve him well at his upcoming home grand prix in Spain which takes place in Barcelona on May 9th.
The 28-year-old double world champion is currently third in the drivers' championship after the first four races of 2010, level on points with former teammate and bitter rival Lewis Hamilton.
