Formula One still exciting, says Schumacher

Michael Schumacher has defended Formula One

Michael Schumacher has defended Formula One against accusations of being boring following a lack of overtaking at the recent Bahrain Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion claimed that real fans of the sport still find it exciting and that there has never been a great deal of overtaking.

"If a football match is 0-0, is it boring?" Schumacher asked.

"If a basketball game is 100-100, is it exciting? Formula One is not motorcycle racing, it's not basketball. Formula One has always had less overtaking. The excitement is still there for the fans."

His comments were backed up by Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, who stormed to victory in the season opener in Bahrain.

"This [sport] is about technique, about how precise everything is in terms of the mechanics, the engineering, everything," he said.

Schumacher will be hoping to improve on his sixth-place finish last time out at this weekend's Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne for which qualifying starts on Saturday (March 27th).
