Hamilton's F1 title hopes fade after 'worst' weekend in Japan

Hamilton could only finish fifth in the Japanese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton's hopes of becoming Formula One world champion for a second time this season have been dealt a severe blow after a poor performance at Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver could only muster a fifth-placed finish after starting the race from eighth.

A crash during practice had meant that his team had to install a new gearbox in Hamilton's car, earning him a five-place grid penalty.

It means he is now 28 points behind championship leader Mark Webber with just three races to go.

"I've had bad weekends but nothing overall as bad," said Hamilton.

"This is the worst of all of them. I don't know what I have been kicked around by but I have definitely had a tough one. The crash was my fault but the rest ..."

The next race of the 2010 Formula One season is the Korean Grand Prix on October 24th.
