London is best in world for comedy says Izzard
Tuesday, 24 November 2009

Eddie Izzard has claimed that London is the world centre for stand-up comedy talent and wants more UK comedians to take on America.
In an interview with www.inthenews.co.uk the comedian compared comedy in London to the Beatles residency in Hamburg in the 60s.
Izzard said: "We have some amazing stand-ups and I want us all to go to America and I want there to be reams of European stand-ups going over there.
"The Beatles had Hamburg and, if you want to find the best environment in the world to do stand-up comedy in the world, it's London."
Izzard also said that he believes there is no reason why comedians should not be able to play large arena gigs, as he is doing on his current UK tour.
"As you move up from a 100-seater to a 500-seater to a 2,000-seater, intimacy is still what you want. I believe you can get it in arenas and that's what I've been striving for," he said.
Izzard will continue his UK tour on November 26th at the Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne before moving on to play several more dates around the country including London's O2 and Wembley arenas.
