Mercedes is 'not competitive enough' says Brawn

Mercedes F1 team is 'not competitive enough', says Ross Brawn

Ross Brawn, the head Mercedes GP, has said the team needs to make big improvements to compete in Formula One this season.

Mercedes were hoping for big things this year after taking over from Brawn GP which won the Constructors' Championship last year.

But in the opening race of this season in Bahrain, their drivers were only able to secure fifth and sixth place.

"The team did a good job in Bahrain but we accept that we were not competitive enough and that we have work to do to close the gap to the leaders," Brawn said.

"Whilst our car is fundamentally strong, we have a development plan in place for the next few races which should bring the required performance improvements to compete at the front."

However, Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world champion who came out of retirement to race for Mercedes said he was happy with coming sixth in Bahrain.

The second race of the 2010 Formula One calendar will be the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne which takes place on March 28th.
