Roger Federer launches $3m charity project in Malawi
Former world number one tennis champion Roger Federer has launched a $3.3 million (£2.1 million) project to build schools in Malawi.
The initiative, which was launched through the Roger Federer Foundation, will consist of 80 community-based childcare centres and will enable some 54,000 children to attend school in Malawi over the next ten years.
Aimed primarily at three to five-year-olds, the centres will include play areas, supplies and classrooms.
Federer, who holds 9,230 points in the ATP World Rankings, said in a statement: "It is a great privilege for me and my foundation to help give children in Malawi the chance to reach their full potential."
He added that children are able to learn incredibly quickly if they are in a stimulating environment.
The ATP recently announced that the prize money for players on the ATP World Tour will surpass $90 million by 2014, while the largesse for the ATP's annual year-end Barclays World Tour Final will see a 30 per cent increase.
