Rolling Stone readers dub Green Day best artist

Rolling Stone released its 10-year poll of music greats

Rolling Stone readers put pop punk group Green Day at the top of their list for best artist of the decade.

Results from the magazine's Greatest Music of the Decade readers' poll were released today, December 9th, with the California trio emerging as huge stars with the top spots for best single, best album and top artist.

Green Day beat pop royalty including Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Kanye West to earn the title of best artist.

The group's 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown surpassed runner up Graduation by Kanye West.

Radiohead's Kid A album barely made it into the decade, but the 2000 release took the number three spot, while In Rainbows came in at number five. Lady Gaga's debut album The Fame took the number ten spot and Bruce Springsteen's The Rising finished the list at number 19.

Green Day were recently nominated for three Grammys, two for their single 21 Guns, and a best rock album nod for 21st Century Breakdown.

Green Day will play Wembley Stadium on June 19th 2010.
