There will be no one captain for England, Lancaster says

England coach Stuart Lancaster will soon announce a captain for the England Scotland rugby match on the opening day of the Six Nations Championship, but he has argued you cannot just have one leader on the team.

He was quoted by the official website for the tournament as explaining that picking one player out for the role leaves the side open to being left floundering if that person is then injured or cannot play.

Instead of having one captain, Lancaster argued, a team should have a "leadership foundation" from which different sport stars can be selected to be at the helm.

"The captain comes from that group but does not necessarily sit way above it as an iconic manner," he explained.

He added it is likely one player will begin to stand out within this framework and that person will be asked to be captain "on a more consistent basis".

"But for the moment we are still on that journey," he said.

The Six Nations website, however, suggested Lancaster will probably pick Chris Robshaw to captain the forthcoming game against Scotland, which will be held at Murrayfield on February 4th.

An Ireland Wales rugby match will see the two other British teams enter the competition the following day.
