Tired Nadal prepared to step aside for Davis Cup game
Rafael Nadal has said that he would be prepared to allow one of his teammates to take his place if the coach felt he was not match fit.
The world number two lost narrowly to Novak Djokovic in a hard fought game in New York on Monday, before returning to his home country of Spain to join his fellow team members ahead of the tournament in Cordoba.
Speaking ahead of the contest which begins on Friday, Nadal sounded confident that he could compete.
"I have been competing at the highest level for three weeks, now there is a change of surface and that's something to assess. But luckily I am not physically drained," he said.
However, he acknowledged that if team captain Albert Costa deems him unfit, then he would be happy to allow one of Spain's other talented players to take his slot.
Tennis fans with ATP World Tour finals tickets will know that in previous Davis Cup meetings Spain have defeated France five times in the last seven and with the Spaniards playing on their favoured clay they will be true force to reckon with.
