Van Halen 'have always been set apart'

People grabbing tickets for the forthcoming Van Halen tour may be proud to follow a band that some may think have always been set apart from the crowd.

Frontman David Lee Roth certainly seems to think so, telling the London Free Press the outfit was never deemed "cool".

"We were just kind of an island. I don't know that Van Halen ever really fit in," he stated, explaining the band could not match the hipness of the Sex Pistols or the Clash in the UK or John Travolta in the US.

"It was not a conscious act ... It just comes out looking and sounding like us," the singer added.

With Van Halen tour dates arranged for across the US and Canada, it could be that many fans will be just as proud as Roth to be a little different to other musicians.

"Welcome to our island," the frontman joked. "Abandon all hope."

The tour starts on February 18th in Louisville, Kentucky, at the KFC Yum! Center and many shows are already sold out.
