Wales lose Mathew Rees for Six Nations game with England

Lee Byrne will face England after overturning suspension

Mathew Rees has been ruled out of Wales' Six Nations curtain raiser with England.

The Lions hooker is suffering with a recurrence of a groin injury, meaning Gareth Williams will come in to take his place.

Coach Warren Gatland said he was disappointed for Rees but was confident Williams could fill the gap.

"Gareth Williams has been in great form for his region and produced some impressive performances in recent weeks," he said. "Gareth is surrounded by a wealth of experience, not just in the front row but throughout the forwards."

The side also received some positive news after the Ospreys full back Lee Byrne won an appeal against a two-week ban.

Byrne had been found guilty of misconduct by the ERC after he came back on the field without the referee’s permission in the Heineken Cup match against Leicester Tigers on January 23rd.

Ospreys, who won the game, ended up playing for almost a minute with an extra man.

Wales take on England at Twickenham on February 6th.
