JLS are so named as an acronym for the suitably self assured moniker Jack the Lad Swing. Although they didn’t emerge as the overall winners of 2008’s X Factor (Alexandra Burke being crowned winner), the boyband were signed to Epic Records and have already amassed a formidable legion of fans. Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Oritsé Williams and Jonathan ‘JB’ Gill audition for the fifth series of X Factor - with Humes having previously been a member of the now disbanded group VS created by Blue’s Simon Webbe. Having being taken under the guiding wing of X Factor judge Louis Walsh, JLS often looked sure for elimination as they consistently featured in the bottom two of the competition. JLS overcame adversity in the form of the formidable Simon Cowell with their performance of Lonestar’s ‘I’m Already There’ which also saw the group garner the most votes in the semi-final stage of the competition. After losing out in the final of the competition, JLS took part in The X factor Live Tour, playing across the UK alongside fellow contestants. The band’s debut single ‘Beat Again’ went to number one in the UK singles charts after shifting 100,000 copies in the first week of release.
